Mako Surgical Files for $68M IPO

Ft Lauderdale-based Mako Surgical filed for a 5.1 million share public offering, with a price target of $14-16/share. Mako is led by Maurice Ferre and has a revolutionary approach to knee restoration — utilizing robot guidance for more precise operations, enabling quicker recovery and, ultimately, better outcomes.

I really liked Maurice and his company when we first saw it, but we didn’t pull the trigger alongside Tony Natale (formerly MDS, now at Prism). Mako proceeded to raise $50M of private equity and a fast path to the big show. Congrats to Maurice, Tony and the whole Mako team!

Florida BioDatabase

florida biotechA friend of mine, Mike Schmitt, has been collaborating with the University of Florida for some time on a database for Florida’s biotech sector. Some early results from that work are now available via the Florida BioDatabase, hosted by the Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator.

According to the new site, companies included are:

“Florida companies that use modern biological techniques to develop products or services for human health care or animal health care, agricultural productivity, food processing, renewable resources, industrial manufacturing, or environmental management are included. Some are very early stage companies. This reflects our interest in tracking development stage companies in Florida. For definitions used in Florida BioDatabase see BioDatabase Definitions.”

If you know a Florida company that should be listed, but isn’t, drop them an email.

Ocala’s Intellon Goes Public

Homeplug semiconductor company, Intellon, reached a difficult milestone last week, pricing their Initial Public Offering around $6/share and joining NASDAQ as ticker ITLN. That is a significant accomplishment for any company, but even more impressive as an Ocala, FL-based chip company — a space dominated by west coast and international firms. In related news, Intellon recently announced they may move HQ to Orlando, Toronto or San Jose — keeping core R&D in Florida.

Their stock price has moved around a bit so far and I’m hoping they see a steady climb through 2008. The home networking space is brutal, but Intellon’s bet on AV and HomePlug could pay dividends, particularly overseas. Wireless and coax are formidable alternatives in the US as carriers and cable companies fight to provide all digital services to the home: internet, phone, and TV.

I’m proud to know many from the Intellon team and wish them continued success. Congrats guys!

Florida Statewide Business Plan Competition

Last week I had the pleasure of judging the Sunshine State Venture Challenge — Florida’s only statewide business plan competition. There were two tracks of presenters: Limited Investment and Investment Intensive (my track). Like last year, the event was well-run and a value to participants and judges alike. Among many I enjoyed meeting, it was great seeing a couple fellow bloggers as judges: Robert Hacker of Sophisticated Finance and Chuck Papageorgiou of The Operator’s Blog.

Winners for the two tracks were ToneRite (auto-tuning/aging for string instruments) for Limited Investment and ReDesigningWomen (community/support site for divorced women) for Investment Intensive. For my track, it was a tough decision, but RDW’s entrepreneur combined a strong marketing background with a focused, niche strategy to serve a valuable set of customers.

I was lucky enough to recruit my favorite presenter last year to join one of my portfolio companies. As such, I was on the lookout for my favorite presenter this year. Even though she didn’t win the bizplan competition, I wanted to offer a golden Kangarua for “Best Presenter” to Erica Courtney of Biodiversity & Co. Congrats Erica, the competition winners and all participating finalists. I look forward to watching your businesses grow across the state and nationwide…

ClariFI clears $3.5M

Brad and his team over at ClariFI landed a quality finance-sector partner — who also brought some dollars. TL Ventures is putting in $3.5M and getting a couple board seats: William Guttman and Robert Keith.

I’ve seen ClariFI’s ModelStation product for portfolio managers and it’s impressive. I wish I had it for my personal stock market dabbling, but it’s geared for large institutional asset managers — particularly those with a quantitative bent.

Congrats guys and let me know when I can have my own ModelStation…I wonder if I could have avoided that YHOO dive….

CES: Land of cables, tricked-out rides and home theaters…

Well, 2006 International CES has kicked off and executives from 64+ Florida companies are glad-handing, beaming business cards and generally playing with stuff in Las Vegas. Not only is Florida well represented with boothage, but a good number of local companies are out there with partners/customers and demo suites — for example, WiDeFi has a full slate of suite meetings without manning a booth.

For fun, I did a quick review of Florida’s listed presenters and the list is included below. For a guy who loves high-tech with proprietary HW/SW, I was a bit surprised by how many people are there selling cables, car audio and home theaters — not that there’s anything wrong with that. On the kewl gizmo front, EdgeTech’s PocketSurfer and Video Without Boundaries’ FlyBoy both look worth a pickup and play. ChannelIntelligence, Intellon, WiDeFi, Authentec and a few others are on the venture track and hopefully CES will bring even more customers/partners. Here’s hoping all Florida attendees win big out in Las Vegas…

New Tampa Firm to Fund Distressed Healthcare Companies

I don’t know the distressed PE business, but more risk capital for area entrepreneurs is better than less. HealthEdge Investment Partners, LLC claims $20M closed and more to come.

“Dingle and Anderson said the firm will make investments of $5 million to $10 million in existing companies that have revenue of $10 million to $100 million. They are looking for companies that are struggling but not failing.”We’re not doing start-ups,” Dingle said. “We’re not rolling the dice on those.”The HealthEdge plan is to acquire control or significant minority ownership in three or four companies, both public and private, each year. The partners will help management get rid of debt and unprofitable business, improve administration, then sell and move on to other candidates.”
